The Kibbutz Shaar Haamakim Volunteers of 1995-1996
Where Are They Now?
In October 1995 I started my gap year and set off on my own to Kibbutz Shaar Haamakim, as a Volunteer. I was eighteen with a shiny new passport (it soon got the 'worn in' look after I'd been thrown in the Kibbutz pool a few times) and had never been on a plane before. The week before I left England there were two suicide bombings in Tel Aviv and a month after I arrived, Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin was assasinated. There is nothing in life that prepares you for an experience like this - apart from an open mind.
That was over eight years ago now and I still look back on that time as one of the greatest experiences of my life. This site is dedicated to all the great friends I made and to jogging a few memories - after all, we're not getting any younger and it's amazing what you forget!
